Horizontal Jump

Horizontal jump, also known as jumping for distance, is to jump as far as possible from a starting position. The skill is very common in sports such as long jump in track and field as well as gymnastics. This skill is also one of the components that is tested in NAPFA test.

In order to gain maximum distance, different body parts have to work together in a synchronized manner. Children need to apply the legs, body and arms sequentially. The action is initiated by the crouching, bringing arms backwards and knees bend to create an elastic tension. Next, they will swing their arms froward and push off with their knees, feet and then toes.

Although the skill for horizontal jump is similar to leap, there still significant differences between the two skills. In order to execute a horizontal jump, the child must jump and land with both feet.

In order to land softly with knees bend, we can either ask the kid to land as though they are riding a motorbike, or we can instruct them to pretend like a mice and like as quiet as possible.

Vertical Jump

Jumping for height, also known as vertical jump, is to jump as high as possible from a standing position. Jumping for height is an essential skill that are used in sports such as basketball rebound, volleyball spike and badminton spike. In order to execute a good jump, the child needs to bend both knees before pushing the body upwards using the front (balls) of the feet. This action is also likened to a piece of toast popping out of the toaster.

In order to gain optimum height, different body parts have to work together in a synchronized manner. Children need to apply the legs, body and arms sequentially. The action is initiated by the crouching, bringing arms backwards and knees bend to create an elastic tension. Next, they will swing their arms upwards and push off with their knees, feet and then toes.

Children should be competent in jumping and landing on the floor before jumping for height.

Jumping off height

Jumping off height is a combination of vertical and horizontal jump. This skill requires the the children to jump from a platform such as chairs, sofas, playground facilities or staircases. In this skill, we focus more on the landing of the children. They will learn about the ‘motorbike’ landing, where they will bend their knees slightly while landing. This allows them to learn to cushion their landing.
