Catching is a manipulative action where a moving object is grasp by the hand(s). Balance must first achieve before catching the ball. hence, it is important to encourage kids to stand shoulder-width apart to provide a more secure base of support.

In catching, the body controls the object, relying on the ability of the eyes to track the ball into receiving part of the body. Therefore, ocular development is crucial to acquiring this skill. Both catching and throwing are complementary skills, however, catching is slightly a more complex skill that than throwing. This is because the object must be tracked and the body moved into the flight path simultaneously.

In addition, catching is more difficult to master for kids due to their fear of being hit by the object. This will result in the avoidance reaction of closing their eyes or turning their head away. Hence, big and soft objects should be used in the beginning phase to allow the kids to develop sensory perception and build up the confidence of grasping the ball. Once their catching skills improve, the object can be modified to a smaller size.

For Catching above waist, create a W shape with thumbs beside each other.

For Catching at waist level, create a bowl shape with pinky fingers beside each other.
